Good drive, limited by app’s features., June 27, 2015

The drive is great, but its iOS app has more limited features than I had hoped for. Still, since I first reviewed this, the app’s feature set has improved. My suggestion for this or any comparable product: Learn what the accompanying app (free) can do before you decide. Some problems are because of limitations in iOS, but more is possible on the developer’s end. Fortunately, that developer keeps working on the app. Would I buy this again? If I were without good internet backup service, definitely, if not (yet) wholeheartedly. (I am using it behind the Great Firewall.)

Good, but could be better…, October 17, 2015

The iKlips Lightning USB thumb drive is a great (not new) idea but great design. The fact that I can drag and drop a movie from my network to this USB drive in it’s native format and then just plug it in to my iPhone or iPad to watch without having to convert and go through iTunes to make it compatible to watch is just brilliant. The fact that it is on a small thumb drive and you can stream your video, photos or music from it is a plus. The app that comes with it is a pretty basic app that gets you the essentials of playing video, music or viewing photos. No album artwork or preview thumbnails or anything like that. Everything is presented in a traditional file list format.

The drive comes formatted out of the box using FAT32 file system format, which is good for about 75% of users who don’t intend to stream any HD movies they might have, but if you have a file larger than 4GB (HD video, large backup file for your OS, etc) you will need to format/convert the drive to either NTFS or exFAT (I prefer the latter). What I have found out, however, is that even though you can copy/move larger files (4GB +), video files of this size will not stream (at least on an iPad 4), nor can I seem to move them on to my iPad 4 and play them. They do seem to play however on an iPhone 5s. Both devices are on the latest iOS (9.0.2 – as of this review). I also tried on two different iPad 4s with no success. The app is also in portrait mode only and landscape is not supported, so leads me to believe it was designed primarily with the iPhone/iPod in mind. Write speeds using USB 3.0 are around 55-60MB/s (when transferring from a 256GB SSD directly to the iKlips plugged into a USB 3.0 expansion card on the desktop.) Performance is closer to 30-35 MBs when transferring over my 1Gb network from my NAS (where most of my movies are stored) to the thumb drive. I suspect performance from a traditional HDD will be somewhere in between depending on your drives rotation speed 5400/7200 rpm and other factors. So pretty good (much better than USB 2.0), but not the outstanding numbers as advertised in my opinion.

Last, the iKlips will not plug into an iPhone that has a case on it that covers the bottom of the phone. I happen to have one of the Incipio Stashback cases that snaps back at the bottom to store cards or cash with the phone, so it works for mine, but the connector is a normal lightning connector and not an extended one that would allow clearance for most cases.

Would really love for large video file support on the iPad 4. I have left their support team this feedback and hopefully they can assist. Will update my feedback if/when I hear back.

All in all, a pretty good thumb drive, but for the price, I expect a bit more (better app interface, use with iPhone in case, better USB 3.0 performance, and support for 4GB+ video file streaming on iPad4).
