We don’t print a lot of things, and most of what we do print is black & white, for which we use a laser printer. However, there are times when color is preferable for a variety of reasons. For those occasions, this printer will be ideal.

It’s a relatively easy printer to set up on our home network, especially since we’ve had printers in the past that we never got to be fully functional for all of the computers in the household. (We have a many computer household, also with tablets & smartphones). As for printing from the cloud or from a mobile device, we haven’t had time to fully test those functions. (We’re also in the midst of home renovations.) As easy as everything else has been, I’m not anticipating any issues, and will update the review if we do have any.

The only real complaint I have is the same one that most consumers have about printers–the prices of ink cartridges or toner is extremely high. Ink cartridges for inkjet printers seem especially high in terms of per page printing costs, and each printer requires a different cartridge. It would be nice to see more uniformity of cartridges and resulting lower prices per cartridge/printed page.

Compact, multi-function printer to serve most people’s needs very well., November 7, 2015

I’ve never owned a Brother Printer before—only Canon, Epson, and HP—so I was eager to test this one out. First off, it’s compact size is a big plus for me since my previous Canon was HUGE and the paper tray and paper bar holder really stuck out into the room. The matte finish is also nice; I wish all printers were finished this was as the shiny black surface of most printers seems to be a dust magnet! The printer was VERY easy to set up and connect to my network. The B&W and color copies both look great to me, and I don’t think the ink is crazy-expensive. I really like the LCD screen—there are lots of options and it’s pretty intuitive to use.

Although I hope I don’t need it, one thing that impresses me is the free phone support for the life of the product. I haven’t seen that with any other brand, and depending on how this printer holds up, I will consider another one for my office.

I notice that the price on amazon has jumped up $25 from when I received this, but I think it’s still a good price for a great printer.

The MFC-J680DW Wireless color inkjet multi-function is great for general purpose low volume printing/scanning/copying/and FAXing. It’s exactly how this one is being used. 2 sided printing is common and it is a feature I like having available.

I’ve used Brother printers for years (mostly lasers) in my IT support practice. For me and my clients they have been sold and reliable and that gives me the expectation this will be a good printer in the long term too.

    In The Box:
    + the printer/scanner itself
+ lots of paper literature with a good quick start sheet
+ a software/driver CD which includes Paperport scanned document management
+ 4 regular size ink cartridges
    + a telephone cord

    Setup:
The Quick Start sheet is quite good describing setup step-by-step. You can connect via a USB cable or hook it up to your wireless network. I used the wireless approach. NOTE: There is no Ethernet Jack for a wired LAN connection on this unit.

Setup involved removing tape strips, putting in paper, connecting phone lines for FAX, turning on power, installing the ink cartridges and letting them initialize. They have a twist and release plastic seal which is kind of neat and easy to remove. Make sure the ink cartridges are firmly installed; I had to reinstall one of the cartridges.

We manually setup the WiFi connection using the on-screen keyboard. It found our network and all we had to do was enter the wireless key. Very easy.

Next we installed the printer driver/software on a Windows 7 PCs. There was a glitch during the install in the part during the Paperport download. It would not run on 32 bit Windows 7. These days running a 32 bit OS seems a little weird. There was no issue on 64bit Windows 7.

One thing I really like is how consistent the Brother multifunction software is across models. Control Center 4 provides a predictable user interface for Brother inkjet and laser multifunctions alike.

    In Use:
It’s new so not a lot of use yet. Text and image out is quite reasonably crisp and printing is much quicker than the old HP K-Series multifunction it is replacing. The document feeder pulled an initial test of 10 sheets through scanning them to a pdf file. It worked great for everything we’ve done so far.

Printing from iPhones is easy-peasy without installing any apps using AirPrint. There is also the Brother App which support scanning to iPhone/iPad. There is an Android version too, but I have not used it.

That’s about it. Everything worked just fine.

    Conclusions:
The Brother MFC-J680DW is well suited for light home use. Setup is very easy, print quality and scanning are quite good. Network connectivity is very good too. For its purpose it is a very nice printer at a reasonable price from a brand I’ve come to trust. For me that’s a 5 star performance.
