… of the highest rated but the Canon MG6820 is better in every way, September 30, 2015

Got this to replace my Brother MFC-J470DW printer which is supposed to be the one of the highest rated but the Canon MG6820 is better in every way. Never a single paper jam even when using different thickness and sizes of paper. Text is clear and crisp. It prints fast. Not that loud. Ink hasn’t drained nearly as fast as my previous Brother printer. Scanner works wonderfully. This thing performs flawlessly all around. Couldn’t ask for more. I use this daily for work and have yet to come by a single issue. It also looks better in person than it does in the pics. The touchscreen is very cool and navigating the menu/options is simple. Most importantly, the software the run the scanner and manage my scans is absolutely great. I’d give it 6 stars if it was a little easier to get the initial set-up (but it wasn’t that difficult) and if it wasn’t for the price of ink refills but getting remanufactured ink is the way to go anyways.

I am pleased with the printer, September 29, 2015

This is a replacement for an older Canon printer with about same features. Attraction to me was abilities to print from various wireless devices. Can’t see any other significant differences. However, Canon did change to new model ink cartridges, and compatible replacement cartridges not yet available from after-market sources. That means I’ll be stuck buying expensive OEM ink for at least several months. However, I am pleased with the printer, including how it looks and how it performs.

Very easy setup… just unpacked and plugged in, then followed the included instructions. It was connected in just a few minutes and I was able to connect to it through my computer and start printing. I haven’t had a lot of success in the past with wi-fi printers, but this one was easy to get running.

I installed the Canon Print Inkjet/Selphy was able to connect the printer to my smartphone, but it took a few tries for the app to see the printer. Once it was setup, I had no trouble printing photos directly from my phone. The options available for printing are pretty limited… the app is basically good for quick printing from your phone… if you want more control over the output, you’ll need to transfer it to your computer.

One complaint I have is the limited paper paths… it offers one exposed tray on the front of the unit, under the output tray. All my other printers have at least two trays… with only one, it severely limits the printer’s versatility since you have to stop and swap out the paper. Since I often print both documents on 8-1/2″x11 paper and photos on 4″x6″ photo paper, having to constantly swap back and forth is an inconvenience.

Printing is pretty fast, but I’m not overly impressed with the quality of the photo printing. For the price, it’s good, but compared to slightly higher priced Canon and Epson printers, the pictures aren’t quite as sharp and the coloring seems somewhat off. I certainly wouldn’t consider it ‘bad’, because again, for the price, it’s quite good, however overall it’s not overly impressive.

Scan quality is also not overly impressive. I tried scanning in a photo and the quality wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, especially when enlarging the size.

I own a previous version of this model, the Canon MG6220, which at the time of purchase (two years ago) was in the same price range as this printer, but the MG6220 is an overall better printer in every way, in my opinion.

Overall, it’s a excellent document and graphics printer, although if you’re planning on printing a lot of high resolution photos or you swap paper sizes often, I would recommend spending a little bit more… the next model up (Canon MG7720) is a big improvement.
