Affordable – OK as a network card, OK as a USB hub, October 2, 2014

    This review is from: HiRO H50225 3-port USB 3.0 Hubs 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Windows 10 8.1 8 7 32-bit 64-bit Mac OS X 10.6 to 10.10 Compatiblee (Personal Computers)
I bought two of these as cheap GigE ethernet adapter for a MacBook Air (OSX 10.9). Once the drivers are installed it works well enough for my purposes, though not perfectly – the link doesn’t always seem to come up on the first plug-in. When it’s up, it seems to work fine and it’s a good bit faster then wifi.

One of the two units has a dead USB port (furthest from the Ethernet), the other is fine.

The H50225 has a little black plug for power on the back, from the H50229 description it would seem it takes a 5V 4A power adapter, though I don’t know the polarity of the tip or the exact tip that would fit it.

For an extra $5, I’d probably get it the Hiro H50229 which is the H50225 with the AC Adapter included (http://www.amazon.com/H50229-Gigabit-Ethernet-Adapter-Compatible/dp/B00F3N2KQQ/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t).

I have been using one of these regularly in many locations since Feb with Dell XPS15 and getting very good GIGe throughput. Better than USB2 performance from the USB3 ports! Make sure you read driver installation instructions.

    Not reliable.
    The Gig port is intermittent.
the USB seemed to work ok.
I would not recommend it but will test it again
