Wireless-AC Technology for Powerful Networking
Wireless-AC Technology

The Linksys AC1200 Smart Wi-Fi Router features high-speed wireless-AC technology along with dual wireless bands of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with speeds up to N300 Mbps + AC867 Mbps. The router enables data traffic to flow quickly and with minimal buffering so gaming, media streaming, and other Internet activities can occur simultaneously without interruptions or interference. Wireless-AC delivers speeds up to 2.8 times faster than wireless-N, making this router well suited for homes with multiple devices.

Ethernet and USB 2.0 Ports for Wired Connections
4 Ethernet Ports

On the back of the AC1200 are four Ethernet ports that allow you to connect wired devices directly for Internet access as well as share data on external storage devices. The router also comes equipped with a USB 2.0 port, which allows you to transfer files or connect a printer to your network.

For users who spend a lot of time transferring large files, such as HD videos, Linksys also offers an AC1200+ router. The AC1200+ has a USB 3.0 port and four Gigabit Ethernet ports that allow for super-fast transfer speeds over a wired connection.

Smart Wi-Fi for Greater Control
Smart Wi-Fi

With Linksys Smart Wi-Fi software, you can access and control your home network at any time, wherever you are. For example, Smart Wi-Fi allows you to restrict Internet access at certain times of the day with parental controls. It also allows you to create unique Wi-Fi passwords for your guests, monitor and add devices on your home network, and check upload and download speeds. In addition, this software allows you to prioritize which devices on your network get the most bandwidth. This enables you to reduce lag times and buffering when you’re streaming media or playing online games.

Wireless Security to Block Unauthorized Access

The AC1200 features Wi-Fi Protected Setup along with WPA2 encryption and an SPI firewall to protect your data and keep your home Wi-Fi network secure. The router also allows you to create a dedicated network for guests and offers parental controls to limit access for children.

Easy Setup without a CD

Getting the AC1200 up and running is simple. Just plug the router into a power source, connect it to your Internet modem and your computer or laptop, connect to the Linksys secure network shown in the quick start guide, and follow the instructions. No installation CD is required.

System Requirements

For router setup and Linksys Smart Wi-Fi access, the AC1200 router requires Internet Explorer 8, Safari 5 (for Mac), Firefox 8, or Google Chrome browser. For printer sharing and user documentation, it requires a Wi-Fi-enabled PC that has a CD or DVD drive and that runs Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1 or later, Windows 7, or Windows 8; or a Wi-Fi-enabled Mac that has a CD or DVD drive and that runs Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or later, Snow Leopard 10.6.1 or later, Lion 10.7, Mountain Lion 10.8, or Mavericks 10.9.

Great Wireless… Not 10/100/1000 speeds for wired., August 2, 2014

As a wireless router… top notch for today’s current standards in the home with good range. What shocked me (and it was my fault for not checking the specs) was the wired speeds are only 10/100. You would think for a router that is boasting the top wireless speeds, then the wired speeds would be at least the current faster standards. I did not think to keep all the boxes for a return or I would. I setup the wireless and was thrilled, I just assumed all was right in the world, so I tossed all the boxed. Days later I realized my internal LAN speeds were not up to par with my cat 6 wiring. Well, it is still new, but eBay here is comes.

Working Well For Me, August 31, 2014

My recent luck with routers hasn’t been very good. I had a netgear router start flaking out after just a few months, a big issue with cable modem stability and a lot of frustration. So, I was thrilled to have a chance to use this router and hope my problems would finally be solved. My network has 4 desktops, 4 tablets, 1 smart phone, 1 wireless printer, 1 tcp lighting, and 1 hd homerun tv tuner. Twice a week I also have a wireless connection to with my work laptop. The point is, I have a pretty good load for a home router. So far I’ve had mostly success with the linksys router and I’m very pleased.

    Admin
The administration web controls are very polished looking. Navigation is easy and most actions are intuitive. Some features like reserving IP addresses were more difficult to locate, but a quick search on the support site pointed me to the proper locations.

    Parental Control
The ability to limit internet time is welcome and something I didn’t have on previous routers. It is intuitively setup and reminds me of Windows time limits. One note, on the mobile based admin the option of specific time limits is missing.

    USB
I added a portable hard drive to the usb port and it worked great. I had to attach it twice to get it to come up but has since worked flawlessly. The speed seems comparable to direct connect, but I’m using it for shared docs and pictures so I can’t say how it works under heavy load. It does stream music back to my PC without any problems.

    Drops
My kids PC has had issues with dropping connections but they are located at the far end of the house and furthest away from the router. There is also a microwave between the router and the PC. No other devices have had issues so I’m convinced there is an interference issue going on here.

I have high hopes that this router will provide me with a long term solution and provide good stability. Obviously, time will tell and I’ll try to update this review if I find issues after a few more months. I researched routers for weeks and became frustrated by EVERY router having bad reviews about drop issues. Comparing this to my previous router I can at least say that this one feels more professional and stable. I hope this review provides some help to those seeking out a good router.

    Linksys AC1200 WiFi Router, September 10, 2014

The Linksys AC1200 Wireless Router is a paradox. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do and does it well. However some of it’s features are a little dated. The basic operation is very good. The router’s operating system is very good. You can not only access it locally but also remotely over the internet (make sure you have your security settings configured if you do this). You can control the router’s basic configuration as well as set up parental controls (a version of web filtering), firewall settings, guest network, etc. The guest setting is nice so that you can give people access to your WiFi network without giving them your standard password. Great for giving people temporary access. The router’s radio supports the latest 802.11AC (highest speed) WiFI as well as the lower speeds (b/a/g/n).

Like I said some of the features are dated. It has 4 fast ethernet ports (100mbs). Today’s standard is gigabit ethernet (1000mps). It also has a LAN port to connect to the internet (cable modem or another router). I couldn’t find the speed on this port so I assume it’s 100mbs. That’s more than enough for connecting to a cable modem but I have FIOS which needs a Verizon router (containing the modem) to work. I wanted this to add 802.11 AC to my network. Connecting this router to the FIOS router using fast ethernet defeats the purpose of using 802.11AC… the WiFI is faster than the ethernet connection and ethernet becomes the bottleneck. This is the reason for me giving this router only 4 stars. If you’re using this router to connect to a cable modem directly, this is not an issue. The other problem is the USB2 port. It’s fine for connecting a printer to it, but for file transfer it would be far faster if it was USB3.

I would recommend this router to anyone using a cable modem and mainly uses WifI connectivity. If you have PCs connected to the ethernet ports or want to put a hard drive on the USB port, I would suggest you look for a newer model with Gigabit Ethernet and USB3.
