Does Exactly What It Is Supposed To Do, April 21, 2015

This is an interesting device that actually works exactly as it should. This looks like a double-ended flash drive, and in a sense it is. On one end there is a standard USB connector and on the other an Apple Lightning connector (inside the box there is a USB to microUSB adapter for Android phones). In the simplest form, you plug the connector into the device and it acts like extra storage. Well there are a couple of steps that aren’t too difficult.

On a computer (Mac or PC, no matter) this device looks and acts just like a USB flash drive. You can copy files to and from it, just like any other flash drive.

On the Apple (or Android) side, you download the i-Flash app from the app store. Next you plug the drive into your phone (Lightning connector for Apple or microUSB adapter for Android). Start the app and there you have it – Four storage options – Contact Backup (no clue why this is a separate item), Local Storage (meaning things on your phone that the app knows about – pretty useless really), External Storage (pay dirt – this is the place to do real fun stuff), and Dropbox (you have to link your Dropbox account to this – I didn’t bother).

Meat and potatoes are with the External Storage. Touch that line and you will see everything stored on that external drive. You want to add something to the drive? Touch the + sign, and From Library is one choice for videos and camera roll. Touch the photos you want to copy, and touch done. The files are now copied over to the external flash drive.

Here’s what I love about this photo transfer – Apple did something really stupid to the photo files in iOS 8, images are in random folders I can’t figure out (that’s if I plug my phone in to my computer and look for the pictures). This device allows me to look at my images the way I organized them and with big thumbnails. Now I can quickly pass the pictures to the stick and then put that in my computer. Much easier than the plug option.

I copied a bunch of different movie and music files to the flash drive. I wanted to see about file support on the app end. Good news, most formats are easily supported. The sort of bad news, the app uses its own interface to play those files. So each movie type reacts differently.

If you’ve copied a file from a computer on to the flash drive and now want to transfer it to the main memory of the phone – choose the Edit button, then touch the files you want to change (big red check mark to show selected files), and then choose, delete, copy, or move at the bottom. Move puts the files in a logical place on the phone. There is also a method to send a file. The send menu is a little different from the standard Apple menu – they include any video players you might have on the phone (I have VLC player, so that was a choice).

The best-supported formats were JPEG and MP3. JPEGs slideshow through the files on the flash drive. MP3 files play from inside the app. None of the files are integrated with the files on your phone (they are standalone on the drive).

The worst supported file is MPEG – there isn’t really any support (the file type showed a question mark). After the file loads, a send menu will show up, VLC player was in my send choices. Loading of an MPEG is pretty slow – a 306MB file took about 2 minutes to load.

AVI and WMV are moderately supported. The files will play within the app. They take a bit of time to cache. The scrubber (the little knob to move a video forward or backwards) is invisible – you kind of have to guess where it is based on the time. Once you start scrubbing the movie continues to play at normal speed, the time changes to show where you’ve moved the scrubber; and once you release the scrubber, the movie caches and jumps forward or backward to that time. It sort of works.

MP4 and MOV both are highly supported. There is very little caching done. The videos play in a more traditional video window. There is a round scrubber dot visible. As you scrub the move plays forward along with finger movement. If you drag down the screen the scrub speed changes from standard to half to fine.

File format support is always a crazy issue with any device. This one does a pretty good job of managing that. I’ve seen another device that just hands the files off to iOS apps to do the heavy lifting.

The drive sticks way out on the end of my phone. You won’t want to leave this plugged in for a long time, it would be way too easy to bend or break the Lightning connector.

I like this device. It is surprisingly easy to use. The App is really well built. And the device does exactly what it should – transfers files. Oh, the instruction sheet is pretty much worthless.

NO MORE ‘OUT OF SPACE MESSAGES….THIS MAMA IS ON TOP OF THE WORLD!, May 27, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This is so handy to have! I have the Iphone6+ 16g. I was in the middle of videoing my kids when i got the HORRIBLE message, there is not space. I run my business on my phone a lot. I need pictures and documents every so often when there is NO internet. THIS product allows me to have everything ORGANIZED and ready to go when I needed. I have so much patience in other areas of my life that searching for documents is LOW on the todem pole. THIS IS LITERALLY A LIFESAVER! I recommend it HIGHLY!

Issues with phone case!, October 29, 2015
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
I wish I had realized it will NOT work with the OtterBox phone protector! Had I known, I would not have purchased this device. Since the OtterBox has saved my phone many times, I don’t know if it is worth changing cases for.

    Update:
I purchased a different phone case and have now used the device. My use is probably unusual. I take online MOOC’s and like listening to educational videos in the car. I have been using micro SD cards in a DigiLand 7″ 8GB tablet I bought for $20 after a $30 off coupon and that has been great. I though this would enable me to use my iPhone and I would have less to carry.

    Pros:
The caps actually “click” on and stay, which is actually important and, in my experience, unusual.
    Cons:
iPhone drops connection to device easily. I have to take it out and put it back in and then reopen my video every few minutes.
Slow to access content – even audio only lectures. This makes the above issue very time consuming and frustrating.
I then thought I would just connect to my car USB and listen to audio from there, but the existence of the device is not recognized at all. I have done this with other USB memory sticks without a problem so I was surprised.
Sucks the battery down very fast – as in 10% in 10 minutes. That is a major issue since you cannot plug the phone in while this is connected. I have a Foscam security camera on my dogs when I am not home. I thought watching them took a lot of battery, but it takes far less than this device.
Have to use a less protective case than the Otter Box on my phone.

Bottom line: I don’t even see what I could use this for. The idea is cool but, unless mine is faulty, they are not ready to be sold to the public yet.
