I will forever buy Speck cases for my Macbook Pro laptops and my iPhones. Here’s why:
I used to own a 15″ MBP, and kept it in a Speck case – carted it in a backpack in a storm for an hour (no choice, trust me) – when I got home, there was only a bit of water between the case and my laptop, and the laptop was totally fine, despite the fact that it had been sitting in a puddle in my backpack. Amazing.
Same laptop, same case – in a backpack, crossing the street….got hit by a cyclist who apparently couldn’t direct his bike very well – fell ON the backpack on top of his bike, and just knew that my laptop would be crushed. Nope, just a corner of the case. Thank you, again, Speck!

Now I own a 13″ MBP and keep it in this case. 2 corners have broken within 14 months of owning and carrying in a bag almost every day (I’m a med student…it’s a must). And the cover is scratched, but you can only tell when the light hits it just right. I DON’T CARE! That’s why I keep a case on my MBP – it’s the cheapest insurance policy I can expect, and I’d rather the Speck case get broken than my MBP. Why are people complaining that their case breaks and gets scratches? Don’t you have it on your laptop so that it happens to the case rather than the computer? Don’t treat the case like it’s an extension of your laptop and be upset if it gets scratches. It’s a case. That’s what it’s there for.

Bottom line – it’s not damage-resistant, but I will happily spend the money on this case for my computer. It’s proven itself over and over again to me, and even if I have to buy a new one every year, I think it’s worth it. If you’re not willing to spend $40/year on a case for your laptop, maybe you shouldn’t carry it around with you. If you’re buying this case simply because it looks pretty, and if you’re afraid of it getting scratched, maybe you should look into cheaper covers that you can replace as soon as they’re scratched. This case is for protection, and it happens to look pretty snazzy.

Thank you Speck, for protecting my MBP.

Also – to those giving a bad review for customer service re: the warranty – if you only pay for a product once, it only makes sense to me that the one year warranty last for 12 months from the date you give them your money….I think it’s unreasonable to expect a company to continue to replace your case and refresh the warranty each time, otherwise you could break it every 11 months and they have to give you a new one for years. That’s just ridiculous, and a bad business strategy. 12 months from the date of purchase makes perfect sense.

I was once like yourself, wasn’t sure if I should buy this case until I did extensive research on it. I wanted something different looking yet classy.
This case arrived well packed and snapping it on was so easy! The texture is phenomenal and I love the feel of it, soft to the touch yet still hard! The case does show fingerprints, but nothing a quick wipe down won’t fix.
When the macbook is closed the apple on the back of the screen disappears and when opened, the glow is bright and gives the apple a bit of a fuzzy look to it. The edges of the glow aren’t as defined as without this case on, but the case protects your Macbook AND gives the Apple’s glow a classy look.
The bottom four rubberized anti sliders aren’t hard plastic like a lot of cases, they may be taken out if the case if off in order to clean them, and they are cushiony in the sense that they work tremendously well!
If you’re considering a case for your Macbook Pro, this is it. I researched every case on the market and am glad I bought this one!

Save yourself the time, forget the knockoffs, and put your money toward one of these, March 5, 2015

I had a Speck case for my old iPhone before I switched back to using a Blackberry, and I liked the quality of the product very much. While I don’t like iPhones enough to get a new one, I am still an ardent Macintosh user, and have used MacBooks exclusively for the past 10 years as my primary computers.

I currently have a 13″ Macbook Pro, and though it’s a beautiful computer, the sad fact is that the body is aluminum, and aluminum bends. I realized a slight curve in the metal on the edge of my screen about six months ago, probably sustained while carting it around in my backpack. I panicked, and quickly decided to order a cheap plastic case on Amazon just to prevent the laptop from sustaining any other unforeseen damages. I used this case for several months, and it was functional, but it was cheap, and it showed— the button pegs on the bottom were glued on like stickers and would come off. I eventually lost two of them, so the laptop wouldn’t sit flat on a desk. Not only that, but the finish on the matte plastic was rough, and the plastic itself was really thin. I guess you get what you pay for.

I decided to drop the $50 and jump over to a Speck case, and am shocked at how much better the quality is. I know, I know, you’re thinking “It’s just plastic— why spend so much more on one with the Speck name?” but I can tell you firsthand that this Speck case is infinitely higher quality. After taking the Speck case out of the box at home, I placed it side-by-side with the cheap $10 one I had bought on Amazon, and the difference was incredibly noticeable.

First and foremost, the plastic on the Speck is thick and durable, whereas the knockoffs and cheap versions are flimsy; they are essentially good for preventing surface scratches, and that’s about it, whereas the Speck case is made of a stiff and durable material that not only prevents scratching, but would actually refract any minor impact that could otherwise bend the exposed aluminum body of the laptop. I do not believe the cheap cases would offer the same amount of protection. The other perk is that the pegs on the bottom are actually incorporated into the design and are part of the case itself, as opposed to the cheap one I had before which had stick-on pegs that would come unglued from the heat of the computer— no more runaway pegs or uneven resting on my desk! I have the dark blue matte finish color, and it looks really nice yet understated.

Above all else, my point here is that, if you’re thinking about buying a cheap no-name brand one of these online, save yourself the time and money, and don’t. They are cheap for a reason, and they don’t provide adequate protection. The Speck ones may cost more, but they’re infinitely more durable and ultimately worth the money you’d otherwise be spending on replacements of the cheap knockoffs.
