Teach Yourself VISUALLY OS X El Capitan
by Paul McFedries is for those who have not used “this particular technology” and/or software. After converting to Apple computers and devices (i.e. MacBook Pro), iPad Air and Mini, iPod touch 5 and iPhone 6S/6S Plus). Initially, I obtained a copy of Teach Yourself VISUALLY OS X Mevericks, followed by the OS X Yosemite. The Teach Yourself Visually OS X series are by far the best step-by-step visual guide IMHO available. With numbered action steps and optional features of the OS X operating systems, including “tips and short cuts. This version of the book covers so many things you can do with El Capitan, i.e. basic program/tasks, web browsing, communicating v email (adding email accounts, in addition to using “contacts” playing music/digital video, sync my iPhone and/or iPad/iPod, using gestures, editing photographs, creating videos working with iCloud, networking, and, most importantly “maintaining” the El Capitan OS X (i.e installing/uninstalling applications, restoring files and recondition my MacBook Pro battery using Time Machine for backups. The book has chapters titled: enhancing on-line privacy, talking v messages and/or FaceTime, tracking contacts & events, playing and organizing your music, connecting to social networks, viewing and editing pics/videos, securing OS X, customizing OS X, maintaining the O/S, working in the cloud, and one on networking (i.e. sharing folders, printers, or viewing El Capitain on your TV et al).
The chapters are color coded for easy reference, color enhanced views of glossy pages and pics. An excellent index with toll free general information contact numbers to the Customer Care Department – I called to check it out. All the above for less than 20 buck and free Prime Shipping from Amazon. Recommended w/o reservations.

An excellent introductory guide, December 2, 2015

This is an excellent introductory guide to the new El Capitan operating system for the Mac. It’s really intended for those who have never used a Mac before. It deals with the basic operations of the OS in a simple, step-by-step manner. Like all of the other “Teach Yourself Visually” books, it includes dozens of carefully labeled screenshots that illustrate exactly what you will see as you follow the instructions. It’s hard to imagine someone using this guide and not getting a good result.

The book is extremely well designed for ease of use. The various chapters are color coded, and all of the screen shots are adjacent to the instructions they illustrate. The illustrations are all very clear and easy to see. There’s an excellent index.

It covers all of the essential operations, such as saving and opening files, printing, connecting to a network, web browsing, setting up email, managing contacts and the calendar, playing music and videos, etc. It’s important to understand that all of this coverage is at a pretty basic level. It will get anyone going, but if you want more detail– or any detail, actually– you’ll need a real guide. A good one is “OS X El Capitan: The Missing Manual,” by David Pogue.

My bottom line: This is an absolutely outstanding introductory manual for OS X El Capitan. It’s also useful for those upgrading from previous Mac operating systems. I recommend it most highly.

Teach Yourself VISUALLY OS X El Capitan, December 7, 2015

Having recently upgraded both of my MACs to El Capitan, I was in the market for an easy to use manual that would provide clear directions for how to find the things I used to know how to do in this new OS. So, when this Visual Series book came out, I quickly ordered it. Here is what I found:

    1. I have always loved the visual series of books because they not only give you directions (much like the Dummies series) but they also provide you with very clear pictures of what things should look like before, during, and after you make a change!! Directions are great, but pictures are worth a thousand words (do not know who said that originally, but it certainly is true) and when you combine the two, as happens in the Visual Series, life gets simple once more!!

    2. All of the general tasks that you would be looking to complete, such as e-mail, files, Web browsing, etc. all all covered in detail with lots of pictures. Each section is well organized and the Appendix is actually very helpful when you are trying to find something like “e-mailing a picture” or “how to delete a saved website password”.

    3. If you are brand new to using a MAC, this is the perfect book to start with. It is easy to understand and very clear with excellent pictures. If you are not new to MACs, but are new to this OS, then this is also the perfect book as you can easily find what has changed and then how to now accomplish the task you want to do.

    4. What this book does not cover is Applications and Programs that are NOT included with the MAC. For those items, there is a Visual Series book or other books available. This book is strictly about the functionality provided with a new system from Apple or an upgraded System (not the apps or programs).

As with all of the Visual Series books that I have used through the years, this one continues the excellent experience that I have come to expect from these books. I have been easily able to find what I needed without having to read the entire book. That being said, I will probably read it from cover to cover because it covers so many things that I really never thought about. I would highly recommend this book if you have recently upgraded to El Capitan or this is your first MAC and you have El Capitan installed on it.
