Disregard bad reviews, this one is a winner!, March 14, 2014
    By
    Ejohn (USA) –

Almost all of the bad reviews are from people who don’t seem to understand the purpose of this HDD and when to (and not to) use it.

This is the one thing that all potential buyers should understand:

This drive is AMAZING for its intended purpose. It is not a very fast hard drive – This is not the sort of storage that you would want as your primary drive to pair with you new ‘gaming rig’ with top of the line graphics and CPU. It will work just fine, but you will need to wait a few seconds longer for Windows to start up and for video games to load than you may be used to. If you want a fast drive, either get a Solid State Drive or ‘WD Desktop Performance’ or ‘WD Black’ hard drive (but these will be more expensive per GB and will consumer more power, except for the SSD which consumes less power). This drive has five very good aspects – 1) It has a LOT of storage for the price, 2) It consumes less than half of the power of a standard HDD, 3) It is extremely reliable, 4) It is much quieter than a standard HDD, and 5) It produces a lot less heat than a standard HDD. The best use for this drive would be as a secondary drive to hold a lot of content that you may not want to put on your SSD (which tends to be very expensive per/GB). For example, if you purchase a Samsung 840 Evo 120GB at $90, that is $0.75 per GB. For this drive at $100, each GB is $0.0333… Obviously a big difference! This drive has one bad aspect – 1) It is ~15-22% slower than a Western Digital Blue drive, and ~50-69% slower than a Western Digital Black drive. However, I read that the 3TB Desktop Mainstream is ~20-40% faster than the 2TB Desktop Mainstream, so I recommend the 3TB model if you want better speeds and more GB per dollar.

There is a new trends for people building their own computers – A lot of people will install their operating system on a faster drive, like one running at 10,000+rpm or on a SSD, and use this (or similar) 3TB HDD to hold other various things like movies and music. If you have no experience have two separate hard drives, there are literally thousands of youtube tutorials that will help you understand how to manage each. For my needs, I am using >15TB of HDD space for research data that I rarely need to access at any point in time. I also use one my home computer to store >1.5TB of music and movie files. This reliable, cheap, power efficient gem is PERFECT for what I need. I have Windows/Linux on a 500GB SSD and would use ~5 of these to use for storage. By using this drive, I know that I am using something very reliable, that will reduce my power bill, and I don’t have to worry about heat problems of I stack 5 on top of one another.

Now, on to more detailed information:

Basically, up until 2014, Western Digital had 4 main hard drive types that it was known for – Red, Green, Blue, and Black.
Blue was a ‘middle of the road, basic’ hard drive that only went up to 1TB capacities. This drive has been extremely popular for the last decade.
Green was designed to be energy efficient and reliable, but this came at the cost of being slower. However, this has changes in recent iterations of the product.
Red was only slightly different than Green and Blue and was made for RAID setups.
Black consumed more power, but was by far the fastest of the four.

I think this lineup was too confusing for most consumers, so Western Digital decided to split it into two versions from now on – Desktop Mainstream and Desktop Performance.

Basically, Desktop Mainstream has the same technology (with slight improvements) as the WD Blue drive up until 1TB. At 2TB+, they call it ‘Desktop Mainstream (with intellipower), they are using the same technology as the WD Green drives. This might seem misleading for some, but they decided to do this because of the increased performance of the Green drives over the past few years. They were able to make it almost as fast as the Blue drive, but it still only consumed about half of the power of a traditional 2TB, so they kind of decided to merge the two brands.

The Desktop Performance is essentially the same as the old Black drives, with slight improvements.

Other than this, these drives are not bad at all and many of the reviews here are misleading. If you search around, WD Blue, Black, Red, and Green are pretty much THE MOST TRUSTED, RELIABLE, and AFFORDABLE drives available. All of these drives are best sellers on Amazon and elsewhere and all have 4.5+/5 star reviews, with hundreds or thousands of reviews under their belts. I have personal experience with 3 WD Blue drives and the have NEVER failed me. Even the 160GB WD Blue drive I bought 10 years ago with pata ports still works perfectly when I use it.

This product deserved better than 3.5 starts. Just my honest opinion.

Good backup drive, November 3, 2013

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)
This is a Mainstream Western Digital 500 GB Bare OEM Desktop Drive in retail packaging. The box also contained a few screws and a quick install guide but no SATA cable. The drive that I received from Amazon had a sticker on it indicating it is a WD Blue Drive. I mention this because others have reported receiving a Green Drive in the same packaging from retail outlets.

I installed the drive in an external enclosure and am using it to backup data files and photos. After connecting the drive it needed to be partitioned and formatted before I could use it. This only took a few minutes and it was ready to go.

Since I’m transferring data for storage and over a USB2 connection, speed is not a priority but reliability is. I have several other Western Digital drives, an internal, an external and a Passport, and all are performing just fine. Two of them are over three years old. Of course no drive lasts forever which is why I make two backup copies of my files using two different drives.

I’ve only had this drive for a few weeks and so far it’s running fine. It’s also very quiet. If a drive is going to fail it usually does so in the first few months, well within the 2 year warranty for this drive. If I have any issues with it I will update this review.

    UPDATE May, 2015
The drive is still working fine as one of my backup drives in an external enclosure. It’s turned on when backups are in progress, once or twice a week.

Great spacious drive, September 10, 2015
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
Drive is performing great as my main almost 3TB C: drive (some space had to be taken from total for special Windows partitions).

Due to Windows 10 release and then due to this drive being greater than 2TB I had to reinstall Windows multiple times.
Being paranoid, I had also tested sectors of this drive between installations.
NOT A SINGLE ERROR OR HICCUP!
