Best keyboard that your money can buy for your iPad Mini, September 22, 2014
    By

This will be a short review regarding my thoughts and feelings of the Zagg Folio Case for the iPad mini.

BACKGROUND: I’m a student, and I primarily used the Microsoft Surface RT for school, and even recreational use. I eventually started to get sick of the surface because it was losing its usefulness for me. It’s productivity features were very much standard, and it had a lack of apps, as well as entertainment options. So I started seeking out options to use my iPad mini for my main productivity device, in conjuction with my iPhone. I recieved this keyboard as a gift, and use it in conjuction with the variety of Microsoft Office apps to remain productive for school, as well as a “laptop-like” stand for impromptu netflix binges, as well as watching Youtube videos.

PROS ABOUT THE ZAGG FOLIO CASE: This case, all in all, is amazing. I’ve used several of Zagg’s keyboards with my iPad 1, as well as my iPad 2. All of the keyboards have performed well, and done everything I needed, but this has taken all of the features of those keyboards to the next level. Some pros of this specific keyboard are:
    * Even though the keyboard is small, it’s very easy to type on, and I have average hands that are able to easily navigate all of the keys.
    * The keys are backlit, and you can change the color of the lights just by a couple keystrokes.
    * The keys have a very satisfying action
    * There are dedicated, iPad-specific keys to control things such as copy/paste, siri, etc.
    * You can bend the iPad back or forward, just like a laptop, to the appropriate viewing angle.

I could go into several other pros, but those are the things that really stick out to me about this keyboard. This honestly gives the ipad a laptop kind of feel, and I really like that.

CONS: -There’s not really all that many…here are the ones that I picked up on:

    * I do wish that they could make this either a) able to charge the iPad in conjuction with powering itself, or b) able to run off of the iPad’s own battery. Either one would be a nice touch, but over all this is the best keyboard that I’ve used.

    OVERALL:
Well I’ve already stated that this is really the best keyboard that you can get for an iPad mini. I mainly like that this gives me more of the feeling that I’m using a laptop rather than my iPad mini, and with the variety of productivity apps available for the iPad, it really gets the job done for what I need to do. I’ve typed this entire review on the keyboard (in the dark, using the backlit keys :) ) and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. I hope that my review made a difference in your choice of purchase when it comes to keyboards for your iPad.

    Thanks for reading.

    Isaac

Great keyboard, BUT requires regular iPad reboot :( , November 1, 2014
    By
    Julie

I absolutely LOVE this keyboard folio … when it works. It’s the perfect companion for the iPad Mini (with retina display) and I especially like the feel of the keyboard. I compared it to the Logitech equivalent and the layout and touch of the keys felt better for me, as someone who touch types with all fingers and thumbs. The case itself is light in weight, but also sturdy, giving good protection.

Here’s where it fails in getting 5 stars. The first keyboard lasted 4 weeks and then stopped working – not discoverable by Bluetooth, even after I followed all the instructions on charging the battery, rebooting, having the latest iPad IOS, etc. Good old Best Buy exchanged it for a second keyboard immediately.

However, the second keyboard still requires a regular reset, where I go to Bluetooth settings, “forget this device”, reboot the iPad Mini and reconnect the keyboard to the iPad. It happens 4 or 5 times a day and just switching the keyboard on and off or pressing the connect button doesn’t fix it. You need to do a full reboot of the iPad Mini. Annoying when you want to quickly type out an email and you find the keyboard not working. I’m not sure if this is a Zagg problem or an iPad IOS problem, but between the two companies, it must be addressed. At this price, you expect to have paid for a keyboard which remains connected to the iPad, without the regular rebooting.

UPDATE, May 2015: With the latest IOS on my iPad, the problem still occurs, but doesn’t require a hard reboot of the iPad. It requires this little routine, which I’ve got used to, but it still happens regularly enough to be annoying: (1) “Forget This Device” in the Bluetooth settings (2) Switch off the Zagg keyboard (3) Switch off Bluetooth (4) Switch on Bluetooth (5) Switch on Zagg keyboard and press the little button on the keyboard for it to pair with the iPad (4) Select the Zagg keyboard once it’s discovered.

Great device, few quirks, May 31, 2014
    By

I really like this keyboard. I bought it a month and a half ago at target. There are two faults that keep it from 5 star dom. 1) the case dooes not really fit the mini with retina well and has one little plastic edge holder in the middle on the non-hinge side. The other issue is that the keyboard layout is a little funky.
I think/hope I have a not perfect example, because the o button for me is 0 or 2 o’s and it is unpredictable which.
it makes a great navigation aid in a rental car (i have the cellular iPad) because the hinge is stiff. which is good. The case is slightly rubberized so you open it up all the way to a normal typing angle and slide it all the way up against the windshield.
